About the Race

The Copper Island Classic Ski Race is one of the oldest ski races in the United States. It was started by Len Oikkarainen in Calumet in 1967. The race was sponsored by the Copper Island Ski Club for many years.

The Chassell Recreation Committee began hosting the race seven years ago as a way to help raise funds for our trail system, and to raise awareness of the joys of classic skiing. This year we will have prospective Junior Olympians at our race in all of their age categories.

The Copper Island Classic is sponsored by Keweenaw Memorial Rehabilitation and Fitness Center and the Chassell Recreation Committee.
